From the Hosting toolbox: Deep Democracy

Deep Democracy Foundation Course
August 28-29, 2010 in Berlin

Developed in post-apartheid South Africa and practiced in over 20 countries around the world, Deep Democracy is a facilitation methodology particularly useful for resolving relationships and group dynamics that are emotionally charged or marked by diversity and difference.

The methodology reaches “deep” in that it goes far beyond the conventional methods of facilitating the exchange of ideas and instead surfaces values, beliefs, and attitudes, which inform and enrich the groupʼs process. It is “democratic” in that it emphasizes that every voice matters and that decision are wisest when majority and minority voices are both valued and included.

The introductory training introduces participants to the fundamental tools of Deep Democracy, enabling them to radically improve collaborative processes and resolve difference. No previous experience or education is necessary to enroll in this training.

What does The Hub mean to me?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Last Thursday, the Hub Berlin community met to explore what the next steps are to take Hub Berlin to the next level.

One of the questions in the circle of 17 Hubbers was “What does The Hub mean to me?” This is our harvest* (click here for larger picture):

What does The Hub mean to me_klein

Reflecting on this, Frauke came up with this possible mission of a future Hub Berlin: “Hub Berlin is a fear-free co-learning space in Berlin that hosts collaboration for global people with ideas for a better world.”

Future of Social Innovation policy in Europe

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

On April 9, 2010, third-sector leaders met with policy-makers, creative thinkers, social innovation practitioners, and social entrepreneurs from London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Lisbon and Madrid via Cisco’s TelePresence technology to explore how social innovation can contribute to sustainable economic recovery for Europe and discuss how European policy can support these processes.

Frauke from the Hub Berlin team took part in the session. Key insights for the Hub movement can be summarized as follows:

- Innovation is moving from business to the public and third sector. The outcome is more often hybrid organisation with a need for new business models and new legal framworks in European countries.

- There is a need to share the knowledge about social innovation in the different European networks between and across networks.

- We need to create spaces in larger organizations for social innovation. Temporary Hubs like the Hub Rework at the Rework conference can be pioneers in this field.

- How do we bring back citizens into the European Social Innovation movement? The Hub generally supports grassroutes social innovation and consists of members from all sectors.

The Europe and Social Innovation Policy TelePresence conversation series is organized by Social Innovation eXchange (SIX) and Euclid Network.

Defining Social Innovation while we are hosting it

Monday, April 5th, 2010

On April 1st, Hub Berlin and the local Pioneers of Change and Art of Hosting network co-hosted a conversation with Pieter around social innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.

Pieter has been traveling through Berlin on his personal learning journey to explore communties in Europe working on social innovation: http://www.pietradelmundo.nl/learning-journey/

In the first dialogue of that evening, we were sharing our own personal stories on social innovation and sustainability in triads. In our group the connection was quite strong around the question of how we as humans can create a better way of living:

- How do we free ourselves from conflicts and arguments?
- How do we step out of hierarchies in order to create an alternative system?
- How can we create more democratic organizations?

Generally, in our group we have moved to a more sustainable lifestyle ourselves through a personal learning experience. Getting information about sustainability and being told to change our behaviour is not very fruitful. I think sustainability can only be achieved if we create a collective learning experience and move activism to a new level of dialogue and hosting.

Moving to social innovation, confusion was coming into the conversations of what it is, why it is so popular at the moment, and what the difference is compared to social innovation 100 years ago.

KaosPilot René who was present that evening shifted the KaosPilot methaphor of being able “to build a plane while flying it” to “Defining a plane while flying it”.

I checked out with the following reflections and learnings:
- What is the potential for Hub Berlin to be a collaboration catalyst for social innovation and sustainability networks in Berlin?
- Trusting the unknown (both in open processes and in people we have never met before) is a precondition for collaboration that can support social innovation
- I see the need for a space in Berlin to have further and deeper conversations around these questions. I am drawn to co-host this space to design a collective learning process around this issue
